The bond between parents and their kids…

Growing up I remember how badly I wanted to be on my own, living independently and being able to come and go as I please. I remember how I couldn’t wait to get out from under my parent’s wings and be on my own. And for the first few years, I’ll admit, it was pretty great…even though I missed them, I truly enjoyed growing up on my own and having the pride of wearing the uniform every day.

But as I got older, I realize how very much I miss being close to my parents. While we are quite close emotionally, physically we are thousands of miles apart. This past weekend they came to visit, and I was reminded of the emotional closeness as my Mom hugged me tightly once she walked in to the door way of our new home. The endless hugs made my eyes swell up with tears and suddenly this almost 45 year old woman, started to cry. My parents have been my constant in my life. Lost loves, failed friendships, moving half way across the country and then back again and the one thing that remained tried and true? My parent’s love.

So if you are anything like me, and geographically distanced from your parents, make sure you make the time to reach out and let them know you love them. Being apart from my oldest daughter now, I can say what a huge difference it makes to hear that you are loved and appreciated. Save the “too busy” excuse and pick up the phone! 🙂

When was the last time you saw your parents? Do you live close/far from your folks?

Cheers!

Michelle

  1. I am totally bawling like a baby after reading this. My parents have passed. I am a mom of grown men. Only one lives near me and I miss not being able to see the other two on a regular basis. I’m so glad you got to spend time with them! ❤️❤️❤️

      1. It’s okay. I’ve learned to live with it. I guess it’s all part of being a (big baby!) Mom. It’ll be 20 years in April since my mom passed and she was only 68. Far too young. Love you Michelle!

  2. I understand. I live near my parents, love them, they are such wonderful people and I see them at least 3 times a week and talk to them daily. My daughter lives in another state with my grandkids, which is hard. Your parents evidentially did a great job because you had the confidence to move forward with your life and join the service and move to Florida with your family. Hugs it is hard missing the ones you love.

  3. For many years we lived far apart (TX & NY). Now, of course, we’re a lot closer, but it still isn’t so close that we can just hop on down there all the time. I do speak with my mom (my dad really just can’t hear on the phone anymore) almost daily now — wasn’t always the case. And I’m trying to teach her how to text.

  4. What a sweet post. I’ve gotten closer to my parents since getting married and having children. We were always close, but those life events made us even closer. And last year we moved about 15 minutes away from them. It has been a blessing!

  5. My mom lives about six hours away and I’ve always wished she lived closer (my dad passed away four years ago). One of my sons lives about 30 minutes away and the one that used to live in Chicago has moved to New Jersey which is a little under five hours away.

  6. My sis and bro live in different countries than my parents and I. I appreciate your strong emotional ties with your folks. Sadly my siblings are nothing like you and this saddens my parents. Keep up the strong love for your family. You will be blessed.💕🤗

      1. I feel it is innate in you and this is what we Asians say you have filial piety. My sister is a mother to her son but she does not appreciate her parents like you do. She ought to learn from you😉You are a role model. Garfield hugs and blessings to you💕🤗
