Recipes and racing

It’s crazy to say that marathon training (and the race) is over.  After 18 weeks of blood, sweat, and tears I managed to finish the Grandma’s Marathon with my sister and cross yet another thing off my bucket list.  WINNING.

So now what?

First, there’s that on-going pipe dream of writing my own cook book that I always seem to gravitate back to…and that of course requires a LOT of work and time.  Having busied myself with full and half marathon training the last several years, that dream has perpetually been put in the back seat.  This in part mostly because I don’t cook with measuring…I cook with my palate, embracing the smells and flavors of food and never-ever measure out ingredients.  So over the last few years I’ve paid closer attention to my cooking so I can catalog my recipes with approximate measurements so people can replicate my dishes.  You can see the start of my collection HERE

And then, there is also that lingering sub-2 half marathon goal that although sometimes seems impossible, it also is something I REALLY want to achieve.  Why?  Not sure…but it’s a goal I want to smash one day-so last week I went to my first EVER speed work session at the track.  WHAT you say?  YOU did track work?  I did…guilty as charged said the girl who’d never run on a track again after 6 years of junior high school/high school track and 20 years of military running, again, around a track.  Although it was a bit soon coming off the full marathon on Saturday, I can honestly say I had FUN…shhhh, don’t tell anyone.  Now that my legs are fully rested, I plan on going back on Thursday for some more speed work.  YAY.

Lastly, it’s time to kick the last few remaining negative forces that have resided in my brain, out of my head and heart once and for all.  I figure if I say it enough, I’ll eventually DO IT.  People, friends, life MOVES ON…whether or not I do…so it’s time to quit hanging on to things that no longer exist.  All it does, is drag me down…#notimeforthatanymore

What’s on your plate for the remainder of the year?  What’s your favorite go-to recipe?

Keep Movin’ Forward!!!  <#

  2. So this is how you properly get over the post-race feels, by directly diving into something else fantastic and enormously wonderful? I get it! I can’t even wrap my mind around speedwork at this point in my running journey. An 11 minute mile is speedy for me.. 🙂 I look forward to following virtually along.

I am also looking forward to the recipes!

  3. I still can’t believe you did speed work only a few days after a marathon, LOL.

I looked at your recent race times and a sub-2:00 half is totally within reach! You are so close! Do you have a possible goal race picked out? That might help you get motivated. The hardest part of any goal is making the decision to just get started already. Sub-2 is one of the most popular running goals there is – EVERYBODY wants it. I think because it really is achievable for so many people. You can do it!

  4. I have an impending trip/wedding to attend to and then I think I will feel better equipped to make some major decisions with the rest of this year. I know what you mean by saying it enough so eventually it will get done. I’m a believer! Way to hit some speed work!

  5. YES! I believe you can make things happen!! Throughout the past weeks you’ve shown how dedicated you can be and now, I sense that you’ve got this new fire in you and it’s come to stay 😀 Happy running and cooking (and writing about cooking!) to you!!

  6. I too cook the same way. In my house I am the chef and the misses and our friends love it. The draw back is sometimes they think I am guarding a huge secret when they ask my recipe and I can’t really spit one out. Often my my meals are done as I go and never quite exactly the same each time. If I make a mistake I fix it with my taste buds and a dash of this or that. Ah well so be it. I love the sub 2 goal you have for your half. I myself am contemplating setting one for myself if things shake out for me in the next few months. Good luck with the cook book and the continued running improvement!

  7. I have nothing nearly as ambitious has you have had going! I’m taking a vacation week next week, and my plan is to chill on different beaches all week. 😀

      1. I love Naples. I haven’t been there in a couple of year, but walking through old Naples under Florida skies is wonderful. The last time I was there, we caught a catamaran down to Key West. It was fantastic.

  8. Congrats on getting back to the track. You probably just need a small amount of track work to get “up to speed”. If you combine that speed with your current marathon fitness – you will be well on your way to smashing two hours! 🙂

  9. If speedwork has not been part of your half training up until now, I believe you’ll have that sub-2 well in the bag now that you’ve added it. Speedwork made me so much faster. You’ve got a great collection of recipes going! Can’t wait to see more!

  10. Ah, congratulations on finishing the marathon, Michelle. What an amazing accomplishment. The cook book idea sounds so cool! Will have to keep an eye out for that.

From experience, moving on is never easy. But it’s so powerful to do so. Negative forces aren’t worth the time or energy. Best of luck with shedding them!

  11. I was just planning on running a couple of halfs in the fall but when I found out a friend of mine was running his first marathon at the St. Jude Marathon in Memphis in December, I decided to jump in too! That should be fun!

I don’t have a lot of recipes or anything as my cooking career hasn’t been going on long, but I love making chicken stir fry. Last week I made some and threw four different types of peppers, an onion and a potato!

Best of luck with the speedwork! I’m convinced that will be the missing piece to your getting under the magic 2-hour barrier!

      1. Awesome! Well, you’ll nail it before Spring then and that will be that! I’m running the Marine Corps Half and the Route 66 Half this fall. Both will be sub 2:00…wouldn’t it be awesome for 2 AF retirees to finish the Marine Corps Half together sub 2:00??? It’s a dream, I know….but it would be COOL!

  12. Embrace that speedwork! That’s what I’m trying to do in my quest for a sub-4:00 marathon and perhaps eventually a Boston qualifying time. If a sub-2:00 half-marathon is something you really want, I have no doubt you’ll get there. 🙂

  13. I need to learn to cook. I’m SO bad. Your cook book would be just what I need! 🙂
My sub 2 half is my proudest running achievement. Even more so than my first marathon. I ran it 6 months after having my second baby in two years and thought I was crazy to have such a lofty goal. But you know what, why the hell not?! I ran the half with that goal in mind and crossed that finish line crying tears of joy and exhaustion. The pain was sooo worth it! Looking forward to following your journey to your own sub 2!!! #yougotthis
